Northern Ontario task force expected to discuss highway bill at next meeting

A bill to re-classify Northern Ontario highways 11 and 17 could be getting support from members of the Northern Ontario Transportation Task Force. That’s the word from Co-Chairman Danny Whalen who says during an upcoming meeting he expects members to draft a letter of support of Guy Bourgouin’s bill to send to the province.

“Highway maintenance is our opinion not up to standards that it should be, but that’s not necessarily the reflection of the maintenance contractors,” he said. “That’s simply the fact that the rules they are operating under are not accurate for Northern Ontario in our opinion.”

Whalen, who is a councillor from Temiskaming Shores, says despite an election call looming on the horizon, there is time to get work done and recommendations to the Transportation Ministry.  He adds that the task force was created too late.

“The task force should have been in my own opinion created back in December 2020 when the draft was released.” he said. “Of course politics doesn’t work that way sometimes, the wheels turn slowly so.”
