Candlelight vigil in support of Ukraine set for Wednesday evening in Timmins

The Ukrainian Cultural Group of Timmins is planning a candlelight vigil, to show support for each other and the people of Ukraine during the current Russian invasion.

President Helen Yaschyshyn says it’s Wednesday at 7:00pm at Hollinger Park.

She says the local Ukrainian community was in disbelief when the invasion began, but now it’s their reality. So instead of feeling helpless, the group is doing something.

“I think this vigil will give everybody a chance to gather and show support to the Timmins community as many do have family, friends and roots in Ukraine,” says Yaschyshyn.

She says candles will be provided.  Among the speakers will be the priest from St. Mary’s Romanian Church, who will say a prayer.

“We’ll honour the Ukraine national anthem as well as the Canadian national anthem,” Yaschyshyn adds. “We want to show support not just as a Ukrainian community but that we are Canadian.”
