Shocking gas price increase taken in stride by six-day-a-week Timmins uRide driver

Like the rest of us, Paul Babin is shocked at the 15-cent-per-litre increase in the price of gas overnight Monday. At $1.68, it’s going to hurt him more than the rest of us.

Babin drives for the uRide ride-sharing service six days a week. He pays for his own fuel. Finding a silver lining, though, he points out that he’s actually an independent contractor for uRide.

“We have our own HST number with the government,” he notes. “So it ends up being a consumable and we’re able to write it off in our taxes at the end of the year.”

A write-off, however, doesn’t mean he gets it all back. Finding ways to save gas is important, too.

“In between calls when I’m parked, my car isn’t always running,” Babin remarks. “You know, keep it warm kind of thing and if it’s kind of quiet, just shut the car off, let it chill.”
