City-owned arenas reopen Jan. 31

Yesterday’s announced pullback on COVID-19 limitations means the McIntyre, Whitney and Archie Dillon Sportsplex arenas can open again on January 31st.

The arena and parks supervisor for the city, Fred Salvador, says all the users get their ice back, and his department can work with scheduling Timmins Rock games and the Mushkegowuk Cup hockey tournament.

“For the first 21 days,” he outlines, “the size of the crowd is 50% or 500. So during a Rock game, we will only be allowed 500 people. As long as everything goes well in the province, after that we go back to the different limits and higher limits.”

One measure in place before the lockdown remains in effect.

“Anyone over 12 entering into a recreation facility has to show proof of vaccination,” Salvador reminds. “It’s the QR code that’s available on the province’s website is the only one accepted.”

The Mountjoy Arena still won’t have ice, and will continue to be used for vaccination clinics.
