An example of a crime of opportunity has Timmins Police looking for a purse thief. Communications coordinator Marc Depatie says back on November 9th, an elderly woman had her purse removed from her grocery cart.
“All her vital documents and keys and other various personal effects were in the purse at the time,” he notes. “So it’s not so much the monetary value, it’s the inconvenience caused to this senior citizen.”
It only takes a second for something like this to happen to anyone, regardless of age. Depatie says investigators hope someone can provide more details or the female thief’s identity based on the security photo shared with this story.
“We’d like to absolutely return this to the victim, so any assistance provided will be put to good use by the Timmins Police Service,” Depatie summarizes.
UPDATED JAN. 21:
Attention in traditional and social media is cited as a factor leading to the arrest of a suspected purse thief we told you about last week.
The offence took place in November, when an elderly lady had her purse removed from her grocery cart.
Timmins Police distributed surveillance camera photos of a woman carrying the purse. That led to several anonymous tips and ultimately the arrest of a 34-year-old local woman.
She’s charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. The woman has a court appearance on February 16th.
