Mattagami Blvd. back to one way since completion of Algonquin construction

Algonquin Blvd. has been fully reopened since Friday, yet police are now getting complaints about people driving the wrong way on Mattagami Blvd.

It’s back to being one way only, connecting the bridge to Wilson Avenue and beyond.  During construction on Algonquin, it was two-way.

Timmins Police communications coordinator Marc Depatie says driving northbound on it is again illegal.

“Well, you’re either disobeying a municipal sign or you are travelling the wrong way on a one-way street,” he explains, “which incurs a Highway Traffic Act offence and there are demerit points that attach.”

Depatie says it was okay to use it northbound temporarily during construction, but it’s not wide enough for permanent two-way traffic.

“We realize people have gotten into the habit of travelling northbound on that roadway to access the bridge. But that is no longer the case.  Algonquin’s fully reopened so there’s no need to use that road for its unintended purpose.”
