Offence and anger at the council table over Campbell’s budget views

The self-proclaimed “team of one” at Timmins Council got no better reception last night than he did two weeks ago, to his ideas for more transparency in the budgeting process.

Coun. Joe Campbell used a presentation to put those ideas forth, rather than a motion on October 12th that attracted no seconder.

“It’s not about exercising any control that council doesn’t already have as part of the Municipal Act,” he concluded. “It’s about what we are doing to represent our taxpayers.”

The only councillor to respond was Andrew Marks, taking offence at what he saw as Campbell questioning his integrity, commitment, experience and dedication.

“But what offends me the most is that it is implied that I can’t read or understand budget materials provided to me,” said Marks.

Campbell tried to respond to Marks, but was cut off by an angry Mayor George Pirie.

“There is no respond,” he said. “There is no debate. You finished those comments right there. That’s it.”

As Campbell tried to continue, Pirie threatened to have him removed from the meeting.
