Fire drives nine tenants out of five apartments in South Porcupine

Damage is estimated at $500,000 in a fire in the old Gold Range Hotel in South Porcupine.

Firefighters were called shortly before 10:00am Sunday, and saw smoke coming out of the window of all five apartments in the building.  Nine people are displaced. None of them were insured.

Deputy fire chief Ellard Beaven says the apartment where the fire started is totalled. The other four are so badly smoke-damaged, they’ll have to be totally renovated if the owner decides to save the building.

About 40 firefighters from South Porcupine, Whitney and Timmins quickly knocked down the flames.

MONDAY EVENING UPDATE: A gofundme page has been established to help the nine displaced tenants.  It’s at https://gofund.me/6c3d94c4
