Homicide in Schumacher

UPDATE FRI., SEPT. 24, 11:30m: It turns out that police now don’t believe that the man arrested near Barrie yesterday in connection with the overnight homicide in Schumacher is responsible. He has been released from custody. The ongoing investigation includes the search for information on who did shoot two men and a woman.  One of the men died on the scene.

Police are investigating a homicide in Schumacher. One man was shot dead and a man and a woman are in hospital with gunshot wounds.

“Our premise that we’re working under right now is that this is part of the drug subculture in the Timmins area,” says Timmins Police communications coordinator Marc Depatie.

The three were in a back apartment at 85 Father Costello Drive, two doors east of the former United Church. An interaction at about 1:30am turned to what Depatie calls a level of violence that’s not typical for Timmins.

“Physical evidence left at the scene as well as any evidence we can get from independent witnesses will determine how this interaction took place.”

Investigators are also looking into whether anyone else is involved, and emphasize that there is no residual effect or concern to public safety.  All four people involved are known to each other.

UPDATE: A Toronto man is in custody. He was arrested this morning just north of Barrie.
