Mayor welcomes good news from two local mining sector sources

In all the gloom of rampant COVID-19 in his city comes a couple of bright spots for Timmins mayor George Pirie from the mining sector.

He welcomes news from Glencore that it has fast-tracked feasibility studies into extending the life of the Kidd Mine past 2023.  The studies are now due in the fourth quarter of next year.

“This is again a vote of confidence for the ore body and the people at Glencore and of course the city of Timmins, the citizens of Timmins, so it’s very good news,” Pirie comments.

The mayor is also pleased that once the Canada Nickel mine is in operation, it will be carbon-neutral.

“That in combination with the MOUs (memorandums of understanding)  that they signed with the First Nations – agreements that propose all of the energy, all the electricity, will be generated through hydroelectric facilities that are here within the North.”
