That brief feeling of the earth moving under your feet in Timmins this morning was an explosion.
Natural Resources Canada confirms that the blast at about 8:50 was only magnitude-1.6. That’s so small and brief, it couldn’t pinpoint the location.
However, a construction company confirms that it was blasting in a gravel quarry near the Deloro Landfill on Pine Street South. The vice-president of the company asked not to be idenitified, but does say the blast was felt right across the city because of the low ceiling.
Fog was just lifting when it happened, so instead of going up, the force of the explosion stayed close to the ground. He says on a clear, sunny day, no one would have felt anything.
