TADH admissions for COVID-19 soar, causing concern among health officials

Health officials are concerned about the effects of the surge in COVID-19 cases on Timmins and District Hospital.

In a joint statement, hospital CEO Kate Fyfe and medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton say that as of Saturday afternoon, ten COVID-19 patients have been admitted to the hospital. It doubled in one day.

Fyfe says those patients are younger and sicker than those during the previous two waves. The average age is 42.

Dr. Catton says the variant first identified in the UK is to blame for most of those cases.

Meanwhile, the Porcupine Health Unit is now vaccinating people as young as 16.  Catton says anyone 16 or 17 who works in essential services and can’t do it from home, should book an appointment at a clinic using the Pfizer vaccine.
