There could be a link between mining and lung cancer

A new study by the province is looking into the relationship between mining and lung cancer. Just over $200, 000 is going into the research, which will be done by Cancer Care Ontario. The official stance on the project says “the aim of the research is to study the relationship between employment in the Ontario mining industry and both lung cancer and chronic respiratory diseases.”

This is part of a four part plan to build Ontario up, which includes:

– Investing in people’s talents and skills
– Making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario’s history
– Creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives
– Building a secure retirement savings plan.

“Reducing workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities is our top priority, and we’ve made great strides by reducing workplace injuries by 40% since 2003, but there’s always more that can be done,” says Kevin Flynn, Minister of Labour. “These projects will provide evidence that will help us focus our planning and spread best practices so we can continue to reduce injuries and save lives in workplaces across Ontario.”

This is part of a $3 million  investment to try and lower workplace injuries and illnesses. 13 projects will be done in total.
