Collège Boréal offering a women’s only trades program

Women who want to work in the mechanical field can jump start their career in Timmins. Collège Boréal is offering a new pre-apprenticeship program exclusively to women, in the Industrial Mechanic Millwright field. It starts in July, and will give hands on experience with equipment and lessons.

“Women continue to be under-represented in the skilled trades sector despite the growing demand for labour in these occupations,” says Pierre Riopel, President of Collège Boréal. “Pre-apprenticeship training programs such as this one help young women discover different career opportunities, thus increasing the number of women in the skilled trades sector.”

After finishing the program, graduates can work in entry-level positions, begin apprenticeships in a skilled trade, or go back to school. The 38 week program includes the Level 1 apprenticeship in-school training, relevant safety training, trade readiness, employment preparation, academic upgrading, and a work placement.

This program is presented as part of the Skilled Trades stream of the Women in Skilled Trades and Information Technology Training program offered by the Ontario Women’s Directorate.

To enrol in the Industrial Mechanic Millwright pre-apprenticeship program in Sudbury, call 705-560-6673, ext. 3003. To enrol in Timmins, call 705-267-5850, ext. 5512.
