The provincial special investigations unit has taken over the case of a 16-year-old boy who died Monday in Timmins.

According to the SIU, police officers were called to a medical distress call just before 1:00am Sunday.  The youth was in an agitated state, so police tried to  restrain him so paramedics could do an assessment.

The boy lost vital signs in the ambulance and was admitted to the ICU at the district hospital.  He died at about 10:30am Monday.

The SIU is investigating to determine whether the officers did anything that might have contributed to the boy’s death.
