The first Children’s Aid Society for First Nations is officially open in Timmins. Kunuwanimano, which means Keeping Our Own, will work with NEOFACS to transition child welfare services for Aboriginals.
The designation will allow Kunuwanimano to provide care for children based on traditions, values, and customs. They will work to make sure kids are safe, and will encourage the healthy development of families.
“Kunuwanimano Child and Family Services (KCFS) achieved their journey towards designation after 25 years. KCFS mandate is to provide culturally appropriate child welfare services to First Nation children, youth and families. KCFS is the ninth First Nation organization to achieve designation as a Children’s Aid Society, in working closely with their sister agencies towards “Keeping Our Own” (Ojibwe meaning of Kunuwanimano). This day is not only a day of reconciliation, also a historic day for the First Nations and Aboriginal communities of Kunuwanimano Child and Family Services, but a day of gratitude and thanks for the dedication of the work the Chiefs’, Board of Directors’ and staff both past and present have achieved.
