Shoplifter crosses the robbery line

“Robbery” is defined as “theft using violence or the threat of violence”.

That’s what makes the difference in an incident on October 14th ago at Dailey’s Independent Grocer.

Timmins Police communications coordinator Marc Depatie says a man was caught trying to shoplift, and threatened the owner with a knife. That threat is what moved it from simple theft to robbery.

“Obviously, this is not your standard shoplifting event where it’s relatively harmless,” Depatie remarks.  “This is an act of outward violence towards the store owner.”

“We don’t typically see persons who are engaged in the standard practice of shoplifting brandish a weapon.”
