Solar Energy may be in the cards for Timmins

Solar power could be on the way in Timmins. Three different locations have been scouted in town that could hold the panels. The company Recurrent Energy has already finished 20 other projects in Ontario. Mayor Black says although right now it’s a solo project, city council may have some interest in the future.

“Perhaps partnering with them, if they wanted our support when they came in, because some municipalities have obviously used it to generate some revenue,” says Black. “So we told them there may be some interest there.”

The company says the projects would create 200 jobs in the construction field, and create $18 Million in property tax dollars over 30 years.

“Tax revenue on solar farms is really difficult right now to predict what it would be, or to state that it would be any significant amount, obviously there would be some,” says Black. “If we can get a partnership going where we generate some revenue, it’d perhaps be a little better for the city.”

They plan to hold a public meeting this month, and hope to start construction by 2017.
