The annual provincial breast screening campaign is on Monday. Mammorama will try to screen 50 women for breast cancer in one day. The Timmins Hospital will be doing mammograms for women who have never had one, or who are overdue.
Stephanie Gravelle, a Public Health Nurse with the Porcupine Health Unit, says getting a mammogram should be regular part of women’s health care.
“A mammogram is a safe and simple test, with proven benefits from research,” says Gravelle. “This is important because breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in females.”
Gravelle says women between the ages of 50 and 74 should be getting screened every two years. The campaign is running on Monday May 4th from 8 AM until 6 PM, at the hospital.
