Romanian church new to Doors Open

The virtual doors are already open for this year’s version of Doors Open Timmins.

And it has added an eleventh building this year: St. Mary’s Romanian Orthodox Church.

Municipal heritage committee chair Nicola Alexander says what you’ll see is surprising.

“Obviously the interior is decorated very differently to what the outside of the building looks like. There’s a lot of history there.”

Alexander adds that being on Eighth Avenue at Maple Street, people already know the building – from the outside.

“There are a lot of houses and residential fabric around it, but very few people have actually been inside,” she notes.  “So this is an opportunity to go onto the website and access the photographs and find out more about a very special site here in Timmins.”

That’s already available online.  But Alexander and her committee have designated next Saturday, September 26th as the day for Doors Open Timmins. The museum and its Hollinger house will be open for in-person visits.  She hopes you’ll also include the Timmins and Whitney cemeteries in your excursion.
