For the first time in Timmins Police history, a 911 operator helped to deliver a baby over the phone.
Carla Oreskovich answered the call around 4:30 am on a February morning, from Matt De Cata.
He was panicked, his wife’s water had broken, and they weren’t going to make it to the hospital in time. Oreskovich stayed calm for the entire call, helping to deliver Mariah Philion’s baby.
“Can you support the baby’s head as it comes out? Take a deep breath, you’re doing a great job okay.” Were among the encouraging and calming words from Oreskovich.
Baby girl Alexis was born during the short five and a half minute phone call, at six pounds.
Police Chief John Gauthier says he is extremely proud of Oreskovich’s professionalism. He says Timmins should feel good knowing 911 calls will be dealt with a high level of skill.
