Graduation rates low in North East, compared to Ontario

The District School Board Ontario North East is raising concerns over graduation rates.

83% of students who take five years to complete high school in Ontario graduate, compared to 66% in the DSB Ontario North East

The issue came up at the board meeting on Tuesday night. Although some students are getting their credits, they aren’t coming up with the required 40 hours of volunteer work.

Board Chair Doug Shearer says the board faces a different set of challenges, including an imbalance between applied and academic students, and a higher number of students with special needs.

Chairman Doug Shearer says the board is concerned about those numbers, and the causes of it. He says they have been taking steps for improvement, including a lot more reporting back to the board.

Paul Langis, Acting Superintendent for schools from Hearst to Matheson, says not to be too concerned over graduating in four years, versus five. He says their goal is to have students graduate, and to prepare them for the next step.

The board will continue to monitor the numbers, and will work towards bringing them up.
