Bill Barilko billboard ceremony fast approaching

A new billboard to honour the late Timmins native Bill Barilko will be unveiled in a few short weeks.  The ceremony is set for Wednesday, August 26 and starts at 6 pm at Porcupine Lake. Organizer Kevin Vincent says there is a full day of activities that includes a display from Mark Fera at the Timmins Museum.

“One of the exhibits is the very puck that Bill Barilko scored that famous goal,” Vincent said. “Mark has a remarkable collection of other artifacts that include Bill’s contract, ticket stubs and program from the original game. If you are a hockey fan this is a must see.”

Vincent says strict social distancing guidelines will be in place.

“Without outdoor gatherings, the maximum is one hundred so we will make sure that there is plenty of room for everyone and they are spread out,” he said. “But if it reaches 100 then we may have to turn some people away.”

This is the 69th anniversary of the disappearance of the plane that carried both Barilko and Dr. Henry Hudson of Timmins.
