Hazardous waste collection day set

Time to clean out your garage.   City Hall is ready for its annual hazardous and special waste collection event.

Environmental coordinator Christina Beaton says it’s set for Saturday, August 29th from 8:00am to 2:00pm in the Archie Dillon Sportsplex parking lot.

“Residents from the city of Timmins can bring their waste and it will be collected from them free of charge,” she explains, adding that “commercial and industrial waste will not be accepted.”

Here’s the full list of what’s accepted:

– Paint;
– Flammable/Misc. organics;
– Aerosols;
– Single use batteries;
– Single use propane cylinders and refillable propane tanks;
– Oxidizers;
– Pesticides;
– Antifreeze;
– Oil filters;
– Inorganic acids and bases;
– Fuel and oil;
– Pathological waste (sharps);
– Pharmaceuticals;
– Compact fluorescents and fluorescent tubes; and
– Household electronics.

Beaton says if you’re not sure whether your junk qualifies, check the Waste Wizard feature of the Timmins Recyclepedia app.

“And if the item that you’re looking to dispose of is not in the Waste Wizard, you can actually recommend it and then we will vet through the information and then let you know how you should dispose of that properly.”

Help is needed to help run the event on the 29th. Beaton says it qualifies for high school volunteer hours.  Sign up with Service Timmins at 705-264-1331.
