Spill snarls traffic on Hwy. 101

Traffic became a bit backed up on the highway between Schumacher and the Tisdale Cemetery at noon hour Monday, because a tanker truck lost part of its load.

Firefighters cleaned up the spill while police officers directed traffic, which was flowing smoothly again in a matter of minutes.

UPDATE WED., AUG. 5

The company that owns the truck involved – Waste Management – says nothing was spilled.

Timmins route manager Brian Walsh says that what firefighters cleaned up was simply fire extinguisher residue.

The truck’s turbo malfunctioned and dripped oil on the engine.  Seeing smoke, the driver thought there was a fire, pulled over and used the extinguisher on it.
