NDP working on a fix for high Northern food prices

Food prices in remote Northern communities are incredibly high, a dozen eggs can cost up to $11, and milk can be $15.

The NDP is now taking action to fix the Nutrition North program. A federal subsidy was going to communities to help ease the cost, but many say the $60M annually is not enough.

New Democrat MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, Carol Hughes asks how can people live this way, and afford this food. She says the NDP is working on a motion to fix the program.

“To initiate a comprehensive review of the program with Northerners as full partners,” says Hughes. “So I think that that’s extremely important, is to have a conversation with those who are actually impacted.”

She says the MP’s want to create program criteria, so that all Northern communities can benefit based on their needs.

“It’s going to be important to work with Northerners to develop a sustainable solution to food insecurity.”
