First child and family services for First Nations to open in Timmins

A service agency for First Nation youth is opening their doors to the North.

The Kunuwanimano Child and Family Services provides welfare services to First Nation and Northern communities, including Timmins.

The agency has been working with the province to become officially designated as a Children’s Aid Society agency. This would put them on the same level as NEOFACS, but the first agency to cater to First Nations in the North.

Alternative Care Recruitment worker, Peggy Claveau says while that process is happening, the agency is looking for foster homes.

“We’re currently recruiting for foster homes, for the city of Timmins,” says Claveau. “We do need homes for various reasons; obviously to place children, but also for respite.”

She says there is a lot of misconception, because they are a native agency.

“We do want Native homes, but also anyone who is interested in becoming a foster parent,” says Claveau.

Anyone who is interested in helping the child and family service can find more information online on the Kunuwanimano Website
