Stakeholders to get downtown safety update

Safety in downtown Timmins – especially at night – is the topic of a meeting Wednesday evening.

Chamber of Commerce and BIA members will hear about initiatives already taken, and what’s to come.

BIA executive director Noella Rinaldo says one program up for discussion is the 24-hour community safety outreach team.  It deals with getting help for vulnerable street people… and picking up discarded needles.

“This has been working since the late summer and it’s been very successful, so it’s good to kind of get the statistics back from the outreach team,” she says.

Statistics will also be shared from the mobile crisis rapid response team.  It’s a joint effort of Timmins Police and Timmins and District Hospital’s mental health service.

“The mobile crisis rapid response team has been great, as far as that criminal aspect of it and some of the issues that they’ve had to deal with,” remarks Rinaldo.  “So I think that’s important, too, that we listen to how those programs are working.”

Participating agencies will also be gathering input from the BIA and Chamber members.
