RIDE checks anywhere, any time over the holidays

Anyone driving on Moneta Avenue at Railway Street between 10:30 and eleven o’clock this morning was stopped by a RIDE check.

Timmins Police communications coordinator Marc Depatie says it was a Christmas Eve reminder not to drive while impaired.

“The crime of impaired driving occurs anywhere, any time,” he told My Timmins Now Dot Com on the scene. “So we’re responsive to that and we’re setting up in a random fashion so that motorists are aware: this can occur any time, anywhere.  Taking a chance means running the risk of getting caught.”

…or, Depatie adds, causing a tragedy.

During this year’s Festive RIDE program so far over 900 vehicles have been stopped and 144

“None of those thankfully have resulted in the need for further police action,” Depatie observes.  “But nonetheless, if we suspect even marginally that you’ve had anything to consume that would corrupt your ability to drive a car safely, we’re going to take corrective enforcement action as required.”
