Water main break robs residents of tap water

Residents of Jade Ave. between MacLean Dr. and Waterloo Rd. woke up this morning to no water coming out of their taps.

City of Timmins water-sewer operator Nick Westcott says it’s because of a water main break underneath the street.

That type of thing happens more often in the extreme cold.

“What happens is the frost and the cold weather causes our water lines to heave,” Westcott outlines, “causing it to shift and break.”

Water should be restored sometime today.

SUB-ZERO HEROES

Workers like Westcott – sub-zero heroes, if you like – face extra challenges working outdoors when it’s -30C.

“We’re working tirelessly, sometimes eight to 12 hours in the cold weather, so it’s tough.”

Westcott says they wear extra gear and use any opportunity to warm up before hypothermia sets in.

“Any opportunity that we can, we’re in our vehicles warming up.”
