Secret Santas help people in need

Street beat officers with Timmins Police get to play delivery elves for a handful of secret Santas this time of year.

A group of business owners provides $5,000 every year. Communications coordinator Marc Depatie says it’s divvied up among people on the street, and families who can use the help.

“This is something that they (the business owners) actually participate in,” Depatie observes.  “We didn’t solicit funds from them.  They came to the police chief and said this is what we’re hopeful to do.  So we’ve had this program in existence for a number of years now.”

“We’re careful in terms of not providing it to people who are suffering from addiction, so that these funds aren’t used for an illicit purpose.  It’s people that we know are just strictly speaking down on their luck and can use a boost.”

9-1-1 dispatchers also put $1,200 into this year’s secret Santa fund.
