Councillor gives Youth Wellness Hub funding request thumbs down

The vote will not be unanimous when Timmins council votes on whether to give the Youth Wellness Hub $80,000 next year and the two years following that.

“There’s one taxpayer here, no matter where it comes from,” said Coun. Joe Campbell at this week’s regular council meeting.

He praised the Hub’s work with young people, but noted that it’s already getting $100,000 from the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board.  It is funded by municipal tax money.

“There are many youth organizations in this community that provide services,” Campbell remarked.  “They may not provide the mental health services and peer counselling( that the Youth Wellness Hub does), but they struggle to provide services to the kids in this community and they don’t come looking for $80,000 or $100,000 and stuff like this.”

Campbell stressed that he’s not suggesting that the organization doesn’t have merit.

“But the fact is I can’t personally support this program based on what we’re doing to other taxpayers and what we’re doing to other departments here in trying to control our costs.”

Other councillors said they will support the reques, and Mayor George Pirie told Hub coordinator Anne Vincent that council is committed to its success.
