Former Town of Timmins expected to join areas where sleds can use streets

It should be smooth sledding for the plan to allow snowmobiles on more streets in Timmins.

Phase 1 began last year, surrounding the former Town of Timmins. Phase 2 will add that area of the city, and is expected to be approved by city council on January 7th.

Patrick Dzijacky of the Timmins Snowmobile Club outlined the plan to council last night.

He says the club wants snowmobilers to use the streets sparingly.

“Ideally it’s to get to a gas station, get to accommodations or get out of town to the trail or to a lake, whether you’re skiing or ice fishing,” he said.

Dzijacky also noted that even though you can get a snowmobile licence at age 12, you need to be older.

“You need to turn 16 before you could use that licence to drive on the streets and you’d only be able to do so in designated areas,” he noted.  “So between 12 and 15 years old, you’d still be limited to only riding on the trails.”

Due to heavy traffic, downtown and areas around schools will be off-limits.
