Marking National Child’s Day

Wednesday (Nov. 20) is National Child’s Day, and Brighter Futures/Early On programs in Timmins and Iroquois Falls are marking it with special activities for kids.

Rachele Pelletier is the Brighter Futures coordinator for Northeastern Ontario Family and Children’s Services.  She says those activities include self-expression, so things like doing crafts, singing, dancing and listening to stories.

“National Child’s Day is celebrated annually on November 20th in recognition of Canada’s signing of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the adoption of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child,” Pelletier explains.

She adds that the convention is based on principles of non-discrimination against children; keeping their best interests in mind when making decisions affecting their lives; the right to survival, protection and development; and participation.

“Children have the right to give their opinions in all matters that affect them and to have their voices heard.  Their views should always be taken seriously and they should have more say as they grow older.”
