Council to be asked to protect kids splashing around and sites deemed culturally important

Protecting children and protecting certain places in Timmins considered cultural landmarks are two of the items on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of City Council.

Mayor George Pirie and his council willhear from the recently formed municipal heritage committee.  It will outline more than two dozen landmarks around the city – mostly buildings – that have no legal protection to retain the designation of “cultural importance”.

The committee will ask council to take  action through bylaws and other means for that purpose.

Council will also be asked to approve a plan for a barrier around the Hollinger Park splash pad. It’s not a fence, rather several decorative park benches for people to sit on, and to prevent kids from running from the splash pad into traffic on Algonquin Boulevard.

Council meets at 5:00pm to discuss personnel matters, and plans to be in open session at 6:00.
