Date set for official Christmas tree lighting

You don’t have to look at the calendar to know that Christmas is less than two months away.

And even before that – on Sunday, December 8th – the official Timmins Christmas tree will be lit up at Hollinger Park.

City of Timmins communications coordinator Heather Duhn says the tradition is in its fifth year, ensuring that everyone in town has a Christmas tree.

Like most new traditions, Duhn says this one’s still evolving with some added features.

“We’ve added a food drive, supporting the Yo! Mobile.  This year, we’re collecting new socks for Socks Timmins,” she notes.

It starts at 5:00pm December 8th, which is about half an hour past sunset.

“That’s when everybody starts to gather,” Duhn explains.  “We’ll have some music – the Timmins Symphony choir will be out singing, and then the actual lighting of the tree will take place at 6:00pm.”

Anyone who brings a food donation for the Yo Mobile or new socks for Socks Timmins will be entered into a draw to determine who helps Mayor George Pirie flip the switch.

Hot chocolate will be served… and a certain jolly old elf from way up north is expected to pop in.
