Health Unit advises against vaping

The use of e-cigarettes – commonly known as “vaping” – is raising concerns at the Porcupine Health Unit.

Several cases of severe lung problems – some even fatal – have arisen in the U.S. and Canada. The nearest to us is in London, Ontario.

Health unit manager of health and wellbeing Joëlle Aubin says the risks are clear, but long term effects of inhaling mist into your lungs are not.

Aubin says vaping is increasing among youth in the region.

“If you ever needed a reason to talk to your teenagers about vaping, this would be the perfect opportunity,” she advises.

“With these recent cases in Canada and the U.S., as well as the increased use by youth in our area, we urge anyone using vaping products to monitor themselves for symptoms of pulmonary illness and seek medical attention promptly if they have concerns with their health.”

Non-smokers and pregnant women are urged by the health unit not to take up vaping.
