Ride for Memories ‘a big day for (long term care facility) residents’

The annual Ride for Memories put on by the Timmins-Porcupine branch of the Alzheimer Society goes this Saturday.

Executive director Elizabeth McLeod says the motorcycle ride starts in Matheson at ten o’clock, going to Iroquois Falls, Cochrane, Timmins and South Porcupine.

“We visit all the long term care facilities in the communities and we raise awareness,” she explains.  “Bikes come in, it’s a big day for the residents of the long term care facilities.  They’re all ready to see these bikes roll in and then we hand out some flowers, we shake some hands, we have some fun and then we move on.”

McLeod mentions that a lot of those residents have some form of dementia.

“So we like to show them that we are there for them and their caregivers, their families and that we’re there for the community,” she says. “So then we make a presence by doing such things like the ride, creating an event that fundraises for our continuing services.”

The money comes from pledges gathered by the bikers and provides services for sufferers of dementia between Hearst and New Liskeard.
