Survey helps improve Kayak Festival year after year; volunteers still needed for 2019 edition

When you’re at the Great Canadian Kayak Challenge and Festival the weekend of August 23rd to 25th at Mountjoy Participark, you’re likely to be approached by a volunteer survey taker.

Don’t blow them off as if they’re a telemarketer. They’re legit, and could make future festivals even better.

The city’s coordinator of festivals, Marnie Lapierre, says the survey gathers information like who goes to the festival and what they like about it.  That’s important to bring back to government and sponsors.

And it finds out what you’d like to see next year.

“If you take a look at the footprint of the festival since its inception 11 years ago,” she comments, “it has grown by leaps and bounds and this is based on those suggestions provided by those that complete the surveys.”

The festival is still looking for volunteer surveyors, park custodians, greeters and parking lot attendants.

She says what’s required is anyone who can donate at least four-hour increments of time.

“We try to make it a lot of fun. We do feed our volunteers that volunteer more than their four hours.  We’ve had a great team.  We’ve got a lot of returning volunteers.  So we encourage everyone to come on out, bring a friend and be part of the festival.”

That could be helpful for any high schooler looking for volunteer hours towards the 40 they need to graduate, or anyone under a community service order.
