Metro planning South Porcupine to Timmins shuttle service

CORRECTION: First shuttle departure will be at 10:00am, not 11:00am as in an earlier version of this story.  My Timmins Now Dot Com apologizes for the error.

The Metro grocery store in the Porcupine Mall will close at the end of August — or sooner, depending on how quickly the stock depletes.

Metro Ontario communications director Candace Woods won’t comment on whether the plan is to put a Food Basics store in that space.

“Neither confirm or deny,” she says.

Woods adds that closing the only grocery store east of Timmins proper was a difficult business decision.

“While we understand that people are going to be inconvenienced with the closure, this store was no longer meeting our financial objectives.”

The company is donating $2,500 to the South Porcupine Food Bank and $1,500 to the on-campus food bank at Northern College.

Woods remarks that it’s also going to test a weekly shuttle to the Timmins Metro store.

“Beginning Thursday, August 15th,” she notes, “which will pick up from the Metro South Porcupine and take customers to the Metro Timmins location and it will run every Thursday, twice a day.”

Pick-up will be at 11:00am and 5:00pm, returning to South Porcupine 90 minutes later. Woods says those times can be adjusted, based on user feedback.
