Don’t contaminate items in your blue recycling bin

When you get a reminder through the Timmins Recyclepedia app that it’s time to drag your blue recycling bin to the curb, don’t ignore the other messages that come with it.

This week’s message is about what not to put in the bin.

City of Timmins environmental coordinator Christina Beaton calls items that don’t belong “contamination”.

“Clothing, electronics, yard waste, wood waste, animal waste, food scraps,” she lists. “These are some of the items that we see come through in the recycle bin.”

What happens if those items are put in the blue bin along with acceptable ones?

“The load can be considered contaminated and then it ends up going to the landfill,” Beaton replies. And that’s totally contrary to the entire recycling plan.
