Summer arrives at 11:54am today and as every first day of summer, iIndigenous people in Timmins and across the country are celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Everything is centered at Participark, beside the Mattagami River.

Organizing committee co-chair Melanie Hannah says it began with a sunrise ceremony and lighting of the sacred fire at 5:30am.

At 9:00am is morning coffee, tea and bannock.  Local dignitaries will be on hand for opening ceremonies at noon.

“We also have drumming, dancing, different teachings throughout the day,” Hannah outlines, “lots of games and activities for the children.  We have some artists selling some of their art.  We also have sampling of traditional food at four o’clock.”

“Some of our elders will also be cooking food on-site, so people will be able to get a glook at that, too, and how that’s done.”

Hannah says several school groups are expected giving non-indigenous kids an opportunity to learn the customs and traditions.
