Grade 6 TCPS students prove to themselves that they can raise $8,000 for an accessible swing

Grade 6 students at Timmins Centennial Public School worried that they might have taken on more than they could handle, when they committed to raising $8,000 towards an accessible swing for a playground somewhere in the city.

But they did it, and presented the money today to Mayor George Pirie.  Newmont Goldcorp matched the eight grand to top up the fund.

Principal Tanya Vincze says the students raised the money two ways, starting with bubble gum sales.

“Anyone who wanted to participate, it was a dollar and for one period for five weeks in a row, they were given a piece of bubble and they could chew it in class, which is very exciting I’m sure as you can imagine,” Vincze told My Timmins Now Dot Com. “But the big fundraiser was today’s, which is the dance-a-thon.  And basically, they had pledge sheets and they asked family, they asked friends, they asked different people just to pledge money and that brought in the rest of the $8,000.”

City Hall hasn’t decided yet which park will get the accessible swing.
