Future of mining depends on youth, women, indigenous and immigrants

Getting the youth of today interested in mining careers is one major focus of next week’s Canadian Mining Expo – “The Big Event” – at the McIntyre Community Building in Schumacher.

On the first day, Wednesday, June 5th, there will be presentations on increasing diversity in mining by encouraging more immigrants, women and indigenous people interested.

Communications coordinator Frank Giorno says there will also be a youth in mining presentation, trying to get Grade 11 and 12 students to explore mining as career options.

“The future of mining really depends on having a strong and vibrant workforce,” he points out. “In the next ten years, the Far Northeast Training Board says that there’s going to be a need for 3,000 people to work in the mining industry in this area.”

From 1:00pm until 5:00pm that day in the ballroom, 40 companies will be accepting résumés during a job fair.

“People who are looking to work in the mining sector can actually bring in their résumé and apply for jobs,” Giorno says.  “There’ll be about 40 companies on hand that are hiring.”
