Feds need to step up to end violence against women, says Hughes

The New Democrat for Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing says violence against women is a problem across the country.

But MP Carol Hughes says it’s even worse in the north because there aren’t as many options to keep the victim separate from her attacker.

She says each year 100-thousand women and children are forced into shelters because of violence.

Hughes says 70% of northern and remote communities don’t have shelters for victims of violence and abuse.

Hughes adds many remote regions don’t have safe houses or shelters and claims the Harper Tories don’t take this problem seriously enough.

She says the feds need to do more to help victims escape violence in the north.
