NOJHL coming to The Mac

Timmins is getting an NOJHL team next season. The Abitibi Eskimos are making the switch from Iroquois Falls after a 16 year run.

The games will be played at The Mac with up to 40 home games.

Manager of Tourism Timmins, Guy Lamarche, says having the Junior-A team here will bring action from surrounding communities, like boosting hotel bookings.

Mayor Steve Black says it will have real, immediate and positive outcomes on our quality of life, and significant direct, indirect and induced economic impacts that will be felt in the hospitality and retail sectors. Black says he is confident that the people of Timmins will rally behind the team and fill the “’Mac”’.

There are nine teams in the league right now, which will bring players through the city as they face off against the Eskimos. The league could be adding up to three teams in the next few years.

It’s still unclear what name the team will use when they come to Timmins.

The announcement was made Tuesday night at a budget meeting in Timmins.
