The Monteith Correctional Complex was showing off its newly expanded women’s unit on Monday, to the parliamentary assistant to the provincial solicitor general.
Brampton South MPP Prabmeet Sarkaria toured the 50-bed unit that opened on April 1st. That’s five times as many beds as it had before the expansion.
Sarkaria noted that staff have received special training on working with women in conflict. He also commented that the added capacity allows female inmates to stay closer to home.
Ten staff members have been designated to the unit. Five of them are new hires.
