Golden Manor sparks heated debate

The first budget meeting of the year sparked a heated debate between a former and a current councillor.

Todd Lever and Logan McMeekin presented to council on behalf of the Timmins Tax Payers Association.

McMeekin says the Golden Manor is costing the city over $3M a year, and they want to look into why.

However, Councillor Mike Doody was strongly against the idea, saying he would be embarrassed if they tried to make a buck on the Manor.

Doody says the Golden Manor has a motto: When people come in, you want them treated as your mother, your brother, your father or your sister.

Lever says not even looking into potential savings is willful blindness. He says although it may not be worth it, it should at least be investigated, with an objective analysis with numbers.

Lever says it’s not about the city making money, it’s about trying to save taxpayer dollars.

Mayor Black says he will not cast one vote this entire term to privatize the home.
