Warm weather, rain, and melting snow have led the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority to issue a flood advisory about the Porcupine River and Porcupine Lake.
General manager David Vallier says it’s too early to predict flooding, but it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the water leveland move anything along the shore that’s not secured to higher ground.
“You should be able to see when the water’s coming up,” notes Vallier, “and if there are things that are closer to the water, just ensure that you move them away. And we’re going to say the same thing if and when we do see the levels rise in the Mattagami River as well.”
So far, so good however for the Mattagami and for Kamiskotia Lake. Vallier notes that they’re both bigger than Porcupine Lake, so don’t swell as easily.
He adds that the flood advisory committee is paying very close attention to the melt, as well as any forecast for rain or snow.
“Precipitation is a huge factor that goes into monitoring these water courses,” he explains, “and if the same thing needs to be done on the Mattagami system itself or on Town Creek or Kamiskotia we will definitely issue those statements.”
