LIVING SPACE FORCED TO CLOSE OVERNIGHT BEDS FOR HOMELESS

Living Space has to shut down its overnight homeless shelter program at the beginning of next week, and is laying the blame squarely at the feet of the Doug Ford Ontario government.

Executive director Jason Sereda says Living Space typically receives its notice of funding from the province by April 1st, but hasn’t yet.

“The 28th will be our last night,” Sereda tells My Timmins Now Dot Com, “and then from the 29th going forwards, we’ll have scaled down services so we’ll be open from 12 noon to 4 in the afternoon every day for drop-in supports.

“We’re doing the best we can to secure funding from other levels of government, from the federal Reaching Home program and from the municipality.  But the reality is that the provincial funding makes up the majority of homelessness and housing funding for our area.  So we are relying on that.”

Meanwhile, as we told you recently, Living Space continues working on those drop-in programs  and on bringing a primary medical care component to its Cedar Street location.
